When I first moved to the island I happened to meet Zak, Luke and Matt who took me under their wings and introduced me to their friends and made me feel comfortable in my new home. Back in 2015 when I first moved here (at the time I just turned 17), they had just started their own company called Banán. They passionately explained how so many ice cream shops and fast food places in general on the island were dependent on dairy products, GMO foods and processed foods. They all individually expressed how health was an important factor in all of their lives, all being dedicated and passionate surfers. The boys had joked about starting a vegan ice cream shop while in College but it wasn't before they realized that bananas made the perfect ice cream base that they turned their idea into a legitimate business. They started a food truck, focused on only using non-GMO and vegan ingredients in their soft serve and quickly received a vast social media following from people who were tired of supporting the dairy industry and being tricked into poisoning their bodies with processed foods.
Now, nearly four years later, Banán has soared into not just a food truck location but they have now just recently opened a full-sized store, corner shop in Waikiki and yesterday their store in Kahala Mall opened up for business. Four years late, four different locations on Oahu and they are wanting to spread Banán hopefully to the main land in the near future. To have been able to follow these young entrepreneurs' journey in going against the corrupt dairy industry and ensuring transparency with what their product includes, has been nothing short of an immense inspiration. I put together a short documentary about the boys and what Banán was all about in the beginning and opening up this vegan banana soft-serve company has done for Luke, Zak and Matt. Just wanted to shine a light on how people like these boys can help change the current evident problems in America with obesity and diabetes -- streaming from government corruption through the dairy and meat industry as well as the norm for non-GMO foods to be openly served at a staggering amount of businesses. A huge applaud should go out to the boys who started Banán, helping so many people on this island (Oahu) choose the healthy and environmentally honest option over unknowingly supporting a heavily flawed dairy and meat industry.
